FRESH safety checks will be carried out at Dreghorn Primary School in the wake of the Edinburgh schools crisis.
Inspections will also take place at Greenwood and St Matthew’s Academies following the closure of 17 schools in Edinburgh over serious safety fears.
But North Ayrshire Council have this week told parents not to panic about the safety of schools in the area.
Miller Construction are the firm at the centre of the scandal and were responsible for the construction of the new Dreghorn Primary, which opened in 2014.
The schools in Edinburgh were built with private money under Public Private Partnership (PPP) schemes.
Greenwood, St Matthew’s, Ardrossan’s Stanley Primary School and Arran High School were all constructed under a £30million PPP/PFI contract but not by Miller Construction.
The company’s deal for Dreghorn Primary was overseen by the council rather than a PPP scheme.
This week, NAC confirmed that they have no plans to close Dreghorn Primary like the Miller Construction-built schools in Edinburgh but safety checks will still be carried out.
A spokesperson for North Ayrshire Council said: “We can reassure parents that they should have no cause for concern when their children return to school following the Easter break and that we have no plans to close any of our schools.
“The safety of our children and staff is paramount at all times and that is why we conduct regular inspections within our schools estate.
“To further reassure parents, we have this morning asked the contractors to ensure that immediate inspections are carried out at the four schools in North Ayrshire built utilising PPP/PFI funding to confirm that they are not affected by the same issue experienced in Edinburgh schools, even though these schools involved a different construction firm.
“We expect to receive this information as soon as possible and certainly before schools are due to return next week
“There are no plans to close Dreghorn Primary. While the school was built by Miller Construction, it was not built under PPP/PFI, but to council specifications.
“Nevertheless, to reassure parents, a full structural survey will be carried out at Dreghorn Primary before children return to school.”
