Cars crashed on both sides of the A78 during a sudden downpour between Irvine and Kilwinning.

Police received a report of one vehicle being involved in a road traffic collision on the Southbound side at around 9.50am today (Sunday), understood to have skidded off the road.

At about the same time on the opposite Northbound side police said three cars were involved in a crash, with both incidents understood to be related to weather conditions following hail.

Police Scotland say no injuries were reported with both sections of the road remaining open.
