Residents and visitors to North Ayrshire were amazed to see the water off the coast turn a beautiful teal today.
Stunned residents noted that the water wouldn't look out of place in the Mediterranean, but why did the phenomenon occur?
The simple answer is due to algae bloom, with large quantities of the microscopic species changing the colour of the water.
The current warm weather provides great conditions for algae to grow following a cold winter.
