Ayrshire-based building services company James Frew Ltd (Gas Sure) provide a range of plumbing, heating, mechanical services, electrical installation, gas maintenance, and property upgrades.
Based in Stevenston, Glasgow and Airdrie, they directly employ over 375 people, including 29 apprentices. The James Frew Academy was established in 2017 to develop their workforce and it incorporates bespoke apprenticeships and employee development training programmes.
Building on this success, they have increased their apprentice partner network as they expand operations across Scotland. For 2021-22, apprenticeship starts have increased and James Frew are welcoming new apprentices in Ayrshire, Renfrewshire, Glasgow and Dumfries.
Managing Director Roddy Frew said: “Going forward, we will continue to explore new ways of working to attract, create and protect quality jobs within the sectors in which we operate. Our values of Excellence, Teamwork, Collaboration, Innovation and Integrity are our foundations and set the standard for operational excellence which is very much our “James Frew Way” approach.
“We firmly believe our youth workforce development approach is sector leading and improves opportunities, life chances and wellbeing of our apprentices and young people. I believe this vision, strategic priorities and values reflect our successful trading history, our commitment to customers and our passion for excellence”.
As an organisation, James Frew is committed to delivering excellence in customer service, sustainable growth and evolving their management systems and use of technology. They operate in highly competitive markets within challenging and volatile trading conditions and have traded successfully for over 100 years: with the firm belief that their main source of sustainable competitive advantage is the skills development of their people.
After a record-breaking number of nominations, they were short-listed as a finalist in SDS Large Employer of the Year category in the Scottish Apprenticeship Awards 2019. This award acknowledges the commitment and support of apprenticeships demonstrated by large employers, including public sector, with more than 250 employees. In the same year, they won Ayrshire’s Best Business of the Year (51+ employees) at the Annual Chamber Awards.
Their customer-facing GasSure brand provides gas service and maintenance to 16,500 customers across Scotland. Recently, they have added home electrics cover to their popular plans and are approved to carry our electric vehicle charging points, LD2 compliant fire and smoke alarms and electrical inspection and testing.
