Irvine Clean-up Crew, Rubbish Paddlers and the maritime museum invite adults to come along to Irvine Harbourside to join the Waterways Community Clean Up at 11am this Saturday.

Everyone taking part will leave with a free admission ticket for the Scottish Maritime Museum.

Participants are asked to meet up to join the Waterways Community Clean Up in the Museum Courtyard on Harbour Road at 11am on Saturday.

The Waterways Community Clean Up, which will also be attended by Irvine Sea Cadets, will begin with the litterpick at 11am and conclude with a Making a Splash Fighting Pollution talk by Rubbish Paddlers at 12.30pm.

Rubbish Paddlers was established during lockdown to help clean up Ayrshire’s waterways removing litter from the rivers by kayak.

Although this Clean Up is only suitable for adults, hour long children’s crafting sessions will take place in the Museum, beginning at 11.15am and 2.15pm.

The August and September Community Clean Ups will culminate in a celebratory walk with the giant puppet STORM at 12noon on Saturday 2 October. Meeting at the Coastwatch Scotland Unit on Irvine Beach Park, everyone will walk with the giant, ten metre tall sea goddess created by Vision Mechanics using recycled and natural material.

“Joining in the Waterways Community Clean Up on Saturday 4 September is a fantastic opportunity for everyone to have some fun, meet new people and make a difference.

“Whilst this event will not be suitable for children, because we will be cleaning up the waterways, we will have a children’s crafting workshop in the Museum so kids can make their own puppet out of recycled materials to bring along to the STORM Walk in October.”

Over 45 people of different ages helped get Irvine Harbourside shipshape at the first Summer Community Clean Up before enjoying talks by Irvine Clean Up Crew.

All the Summer Community Clean Up events are also part of the national Climate Fringe Week (September 18 – 26), which celebrates and supports all the ways in which everyone can help care for the environment.
