A councillor described as 'one of life's true gentlemen' who served Irvine residents for two decades sadly passed away this week.
Tom Barr was first elected as the Labour member for Irvine Woodlands, as part of Cunninghame District Council, in 1992, and continued with the formation of North Ayrshire Council until 2003.
In 2003, he became councillor for the Woodland North and Girdle Toll ward, and re-elected in the new multi-member ward of Irvine East, from 2007 until 2012.
During his time he served on various Boards and groups, including North Ayrshire Leisure Ltd, Harbour Arts Centre (Irvine) Ltd, Scottish Maritime Museum Trust, North Ayrshire Municipal Bank Ltd, West of Scotland Loan Fund, and North Ayrshire Leisure Trading Services Ltd.
Tom also served for a time as Chair of the Marymass Committee.
Provost Ian Clarkson said: "It was with deep regret on Wednesday, that we heard of the passing of former Councillor, Tom Barr.
"Tom has been described as “one of life’s gentlemen, having a great sense of fun, and who was a great pleasure to work with on the Council.”
"He was always helpful and on hand to offer advice, especially to newly-elected Councillors, no matter what party they were a member of and when meetings ended, he enjoyed his coffee in the Member’s Lounge.
"The sadness of Tom’s passing has been felt by Elected Members and Officers of the Council alike, who have shown their respect in their thoughts, and words.
"My own thoughts on Tom are the same, and more, as his other fellow workers. I had much to thank Tom for, when I first entered the Council in 1995.
"Tom was there, showing me around, introducing me to Council officers, and generally ensuring I felt comfortable in my new surroundings. It was Tom who personally said to me: 'It is now the right time for you to take over the reins of Marymass'. Tom had time for everyone. He was a ‘good fella’."
Council Chief Executive, Craig Hatton wrote: “He was extremely welcoming when I arrived, and we formed an excellent relationship. He was passionate in his work, and strove to drive improvements for his Constituents, and wider North Ayrshire residents”.
Past Chief Executive Elma Murray said: “I am very sad to hear of the passing of Tom Barr - a sterling councillor at North Ayrshire Council.
"He was such a wonderful councillor to work with - he focused on what was needed for his constituents and always looked to do things better."
