A HUB providing support to women across Ayrshire is to receive a major funding boost from the investment arm of the group which runs the Big Issue magazine.

The Ayrshire Women’s Hub is one of four social ventures set to receive a share of £500,000 from Power Up Scotland, a funding programme run by Big Issue Invest.

Angie-Leigh McPike of Ayrshire Women’s Hub said: “We provide support to the women and young girls of Ayrshire who face a complex mix of interlinked issues including mental ill health, addictions, abuse, homelessness, financial, social and relationship difficulties etc.

“All of these issues intensified during lockdown and in particular loneliness due to increased social isolation.

“In our four years of operation we have supported more than six thousand people, providing more than 20,000 support sessions.

“Our support structure is unique - we offer one to one emotional and practical support, groups, classes, workshop, education but most of all the only ‘safe social space’ in Ayr that lets you relax, enjoy the atmosphere and be safe with an amazing professional friendly team there to support.”

Danyal Sattar, CEO of Big Issue Invest, said: “It is challenging for social ventures to secure early-stage funding. We are, therefore, so pleased to work with our brilliant partners in Scotland.

“The work these social ventures do in their communities is makes a real difference and it has been an honour to help them take this further.”

The investment will help Ayrshire Women’s Hub to empower women and children to lead independent, healthy lives and enjoy equal access to opportunities.

It will provide funding for holistic support services, education and training, awareness raising, peer support groups, social activities, and a safe space for all.
