NORTH Ayrshire Provost Anthea Dickson has delivered her festive message as she looks back on a "challenging" 2022.
She said: "Christmas is a special time – it gives us the chance to share the joy of the season, make new memories with family and strengthen our friendships.
"There’s no doubt that 2022 has been a challenge for most of us. Only a very few lucky people will escape the effects of the cost-of-living crisis with rising energy costs and inflation.
"For it to come so quickly after the Covid-19 pandemic has compounded the anxiety many will currently feel.
"We can’t ignore the many challenges we face in our everyday lives, but Christmas is a chance for us to try to put those to one side for a short while and embrace the time we spend with those who are closest to us.
"Perhaps kindness and compassion are the greatest gifts we can give this year."
The Provost continued: "That might come in the form of an extra visit to check on an elderly neighbour, or the gift of a meal for someone we know is finding life difficult at the moment.
"The connections we make with other people sustain us throughout our lives and it’s so important that we maintain those connections through these challenging times.
"We often don’t know what trials and tribulations are being faced by other people – even close friends and family – so that extra visit and show of love and companionship can make a world of difference to someone.
"These simple acts of kindness sum up what Christmas is all about – that shared feeling of joy and love.
"It’s important to remember that for those struggling this Christmas, help and support is available from a wide variety of sources, including the Council’s website and social media channels. Please don’t be afraid to look for help.
"At this time of year, we should also spare a thought for those whose lives have been upended by the war in Ukraine. It’s difficult to imagine how the past year must have been for those either fighting on the frontline, or their families who are at home or have had to flee to other countries.
"More than 200 Ukrainians are currently calling North Ayrshire their home and we send them our very best wishes this Christmas and hope for a better year ahead for them.
"So, as Christmas approaches, please remember to look out for your families, friends and neighbours – it might be the best gift you can give.
"The nights will be dark and the air will be cold, but we can all try to make it a little bit brighter and warmer for everyone we meet.
"On behalf of everyone at North Ayrshire Council, I wish each and every one of you a joyous Christmas and may 2023 bring about better times for us all."
