A bid to turn an eyesore area of Irvine into a “vibrant” part of the town centre is on the cards again.

Labour councillor Robert Foster brought forward a motion to the full council last Wednesday.

He asked that: “A report is tabled to the first meeting of council following the summer recess outlining the ownership position and options for bringing the old Forum building, old Ruby Tuesdays building and subsequent surrounding buildings that have fallen into disrepair back into a usable state."

Depute North Ayrshire Council leader Shaun Macaulay then put forward an amendment which read: “Council asks that a working group is arranged of local members and relevant officers to discuss and evaluate options outlining the ownership position and options for bringing the old Forum building, old Ruby Tuesdays building and subsequent surrounding buildings that have fallen into disrepair back into a usable state.”

This amendment was accepted by Labour.

The area was a thriving part of Irvine in the 1990s, with Ruby Tuesdays and the nearby Judy Chicago’s disco the centre of entertainment. The Forum shopping centre was also a real hub and focal point.

Councillor Macaulay said afterwards: “Ruby Tuesdays and the Forum are an eyesore in the town centre. They have been left derelict for years.

“I believe the area could be a vibrant part of the town centre. Although the buildings are privately owned, I feel it is our duty as a local authority to explore what we can do.

“I welcome the opportunity to engage with the local community and other local councillors to come together and find a solution for the area.

“We all want what’s best for Irvine and I hope we can get action soon to explore the options we have.”
