Work is well advanced on Irvine’s revamped tennis courts and the smash-hit new facilities should be open before the end of the summer holidays.
Irvine Locality Partnership (ILP) successfully teamed up with Irvine Tennis Community (ITC) to secure £100,000 in community investment funding from North Ayrshire Council last summer.
The community sports club’s proposal asked for the cash to develop the sporting centre in Thornhouse Avenue – approved by the council – as part of a community asset transfer.
The transfer of ownership to the tennis club supports ILP’s priorities of improving community facilities, challenging poverty and encouraging residents to lead healthier, happier and active lives.
Chair Chris McKenna said: “Work started in early May. The red ash surface is being removed and new drainage is being put in. Power cables and ducting are being installed for floodlights.
“Fencing is being shared so we can have three full-size courts and two mini- courts.
“This work is taking roughly 14 to 16 weeks at a cost of £230,000. It should be open in early August and it will be a much-improved facility that will be playable all year round apart from snow and ice conditions.”
North Ayrshire Council depute leader Shaun Macaulay, who championed the transfer of the courts to the community, welcomed the news of progress.
He said: “I am delighted to see the progress being made on the redevelopment of the Irvine tennis courts. Credit is due to all members of the Irvine Tennis Club for making this happen.
“This hasn’t been an easy journey but I am delighted we will soon have tennis courts for all to enjoy.”
