Irvine Clean Up Crew are hosting a big riverbank clean next month - and they are looking for more volunteers to take part.

The event will be held on Saturday, September 2 and Sunday, September 3, with both morning and afternoon sessions taking place.

The Clean Up Crew will be working alongside the Rubbish Paddlers, Irvine Sea Cadets, the Scottish Maritime Museum and others to clear all of the litter that has gathered along a stretch of the River Irvine.

The group's chair, Jennifer Pless, told the Times: "We will be focusing our attention on the riverbank that stretches from the Ayrshire Metals site (near the Maritime Museum) all the way round to the railway viaduct.

"It is currently in a huge mess with plastic bottles, kids' toys, footballs, fridges and a whole host of other junk.

"We need as many people as possible to come and help over the weekend so that we can tidy it up as best we can.

"We will be out 10am-3pm on both days. You can sign up for as few or as many sessions as you can manage."

Jennifer added: "We've got lots of equipment, but if you have your own, please bring it. Sturdy shoes are a requirement to protect your feet and ankles.

"We'll be turning anyone away who shows up in sandals (it's pretty uneven and there is a lot of glass about). If you have decent gardening gloves, bring them too.

"The area we are targetting is a minimum 10/15min walk from the meeting point and there isn't much shade, so please bring sunscreen and a hat to protect yourself and something to eat/drink. We'll bring some snack supplies too."

The clean up is not suitable for under 16s. Also, due to the uneven nature of the ground in the area, it is not suitable for anyone with limited mobility.
