This week we take a look back at the big events in Irvine and Kilwinning in February 2014.

And judging by the Irvine Times from the period, the big talking points were rugby, Rabbie Burns and Elvis Presley.

Youngsters at Irvine’s Loudoun Montgomery Primary School had a ball when they took part in rugby taster sessions. 

Senior pupils were given the chance to take part in the sessions and it’s clear to see that they had a great time.

Irvine Times: Freckfest

Freckfest officially launched for its second year after a storming sell-out gig.

Irvine’s Harbour Arts Centre was rocking as the official launch for the festival took place on Friday, February 7, 2014. It was a real family affair as singer Colin Kennedy and talented son Sean, along with their backing bands, took the Harbour Arts Centre by storm with an electric set.

The previous summer’s inaugural Freckfest, created as a tribute to the late Willie Freckleton, was a resounding success and the 2014 festival was due to take place that June.

Irvine Times: Elvis

More than three decades after Elvis Presley left the building, Irvine’s Paul Downie was still All Shook Up by the King.

The father-of-three was preparing for one of the busiest years yet as DJ and press officer with The Elvis Touch - the Glasgow Elvis Presley Fan Club - as they celebrated their 50th anniversary.

Irvine Times: Burns

Tim Swan, past president of Irvine Burns Club, proposed the Immortal Memory. The Toast to the Laddies was proposed by Pat McPhee with Father Willie Boyd responding on behalf of the Laddies.

Irvine Times: Calcutta

An Irvine woman took centre stage at Scotland’s biggest stadium after winning a special competition.

Fiona McMurray tossed the coin at the Six Nations rugby match between Scotland and England at Murrayfield, appearing in front of a sell-out crowd of 67,000 people.

Sadly Scotland needed more than Fiona as their good luck charm with England easing to a 20-0 victory.

Irvine Times: Annick Primary pupil Rachel Miller was a very special guest of Irvine Burns Club

Irvine Burns Club welcomed the 5,000th young visitor through its doors with a special presentation.

Rachel Miller, of Annick Primary School, attended the club’s Wellwood home with the rest of her P7 class on Friday, January 31, as part of an ‘introduction to Burns’ programme.

The 11-year-old was presented with a commemorative copy of the ‘Burns Encyclopedia’ to mark the occasion.
