Irvine is set to turn the clock back to 1944 after plans were unveiled to commemorate the historic D-Day landings 80 years ago.

Coastwatch Scotland are organising a special anniversary celebration of the event, which turned the tide of the Second World War. at the harbourside.

The event will take place on the evening of Thursday, June 6, and Irvine Community Council, along with other groups are being invited to take part.

The event will see a parade leaving the Scottish Maritime Museum at 6.30pm and heading to the beach. The beacon is to be lit at 9.15pm and classic cars will be on parade with a fire engine also attending.

Irvine Pipe Band have been approached, along with Irvine and Dreghorn Brass Band with Irvine Beat FM coming along.

Organisers hope local groups will take part in the parade, including the Boys Brigade and Sea Scouts and there will also be musical entertainment with songs like White Cliffs of Dover and We’ll Meet Again being sung on the night.

Boats will be out at sea on the night and they hope people will step off on to the beach in the style of the landings.

Community council treasurer Jean Walker said: “At that time, the basic food was fish and chips and peas so I have spoken to the Ship Inn, Harbour Lights and have still got Niche to ask if they can come up with a ration fish and chips cheap.

"I have also asked them to approach the breweries to produce a barrel of beer at the price it was on D Day.”

The Royal British Legion and Veterans First are also being contacted by the community council to see if they will get involved in the event.
