Young carers across North Ayrshire are getting a well-deserved Easter break thanks to North Ayrshire Health and Social Care Partnership and Carers Gateway North Ayrshire.
More than £20,000 has been allocated to organise nine exciting events during the school break, benefitting roughly 200 young carers and their families.
The programme for the carers, aged five to 18, kicked off on April 2.
Activities on the schedule include art therapy at Arty Party Crafts in Ardrossan, a family day out at the Heads of Ayr Farm Park, a trip to the Science Museum in Glasgow, and a pony riding day at Kelburn Castle.
The programme will conclude with a sailing weekend by the Ocean Youth Trust from April 12 to 14.
David Cooke, service manager of Carers Gateway North Ayrshire, which supports young carers between the ages of eight to 18 across the region, said: "This is the first time we've been able to offer this level of programming specifically for young carers over the Easter break.
"Thanks to the increased funding from the HSCP, we can finally give these remarkable young people the respite and fun they so richly deserve.
"It’s an opportunity for them to really enjoy some family time together."
For 14-year-old Sarah, who cares for her mother, the Easter activities are a lifeline.
She said: "The pony riding and outdoor adventure day are going to be brilliant.
"It's nice to have a break and be around people who understand what you're going through as a young carer."
Jack, 16, has been caring for his chronically ill parent since he was 11.
He is looking forward to the art therapy session, adding: "Painting and drawing really helps me de-stress and process my emotions. Having that creative outlet over Easter will mean a lot."
Scott Hunter, chief social work officer at the North Ayrshire Health and Social Care Partnership, said: "This is a fantastic programme of events that will allow young carers to take some time out from their caring roles and have some fun with their families and peers.
“Our young carers do a wonderful job, however looking after a loved one can be a huge responsibility that can sometimes have a negative impact on their own wellbeing.
“We are delighted that our strengthened partnership with the Carers Gateway has helped to make these opportunities possible for North Ayrshire’s many young carers, offering them a chance to relax and enjoy a break from their day-to-day responsibilities.”
