A Saltcoats man has been remanded in custody after an alleged assault in Irvine which left a man in hospital.

Richard Kelly, 42, and Irvine woman Lauren McEwan appeared in private at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court on Monday, June 3.

Police were called to a report of an incident in Beaton Terrace in Irvine in the early hours of Saturday, June 1.

A 32-year-old man was taken to Crosshouse Hospital for treatment following the incident.

Mr Kelly appeared in court charged with assault to severe injury and danger of life, as well as being in possession of controlled drugs with intent to supply.

Ms McEwan, 35, is accused of being concerned in the supply of a controlled drug.

Neither accused made any plea or declaration during Monday's brief court hearing.

Mr Kelly was remanded in custody and is due to appear in court again within eight days.

Ms McEwan was released on bail, with the date of her next court appearance yet to be confirmed.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “At around 1.40am on Saturday, June 1, 2024 officers received a report of a serious assault in the Beaton Terrace area of Irvine.

"A 32-year-old man was taken to Crosshouse Hospital for treatment.

"A 42-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman were arrested and charged in connection with the incident.

"A report will be sent to the procurator fiscal."

All accused persons reported in the Irvine Times and Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald are considered innocent, unless they are later found, or admit to being, guilty.
