PART of the busy A78 road in North Ayrshire was closed following a four vehicle crash.

Traffic Scotland - Scotland's trunk road traffic intelligence service - said in Thursday, June 13, the the closure was as a result of the incident around the B779 Bogside turn off on the northbound section of the road.

It led to heavy traffic congestion in the area with motorist tailed back for miles along the road - from the Pennyburn roundabout back towards Irvine and Kilwinning.

While eyewitnesses have stated that a number of emergency crews were on site dealing with the incident.

A notice regarding the incident was posted on the Traffic Scotland website.

It said: "The A78 at Kilwinning is currently closed northbound due to a road traffic incident.

"Road users are advised to use an alternative route and expect longer than normal travel times."

While Police Scotland added that four vehicles had been involved in the crash which took place at around 5.30pm.

A spokesperson said: "The A78 is closed at the Eglinton roundabout north of Irvine following a four-vehicle crash that happened around 5.30pm on Thursday, June 13.

"Emergency services are in attendance and traffic is being diverted via Kilwinning.

"Please be aware and avoid the area if possible."

Traffic Scotland reported that the road had re-opened shortly after 8pm on Thursday.

Police Scotland, the Scottish Ambulance Service and Scottish Fire and Rescue Service have been approached for comment.
