Plans to turn the former M&Co shop in Irvine into a bowling alley have been given the green light.

We previously reported that proposals have been submitted to North Ayrshire Council to change the use of the old Bridgegate shop, which closed its doors in 2023 when the clothing retailer collapsed.

The exciting plans will see the space turned into a ten pin bowling alley, golf simulator, karaoke room, snooker/pool hall and public bar with external seating.

Proposals show that the function areas would be located at the rear of the premises, with the pool/snooker club would be upstairs, and the public bar at the front part of the venue.

The applicant said its plans would bring between 10 and 15 full-time and part-time jobs.

In a report of the handling of the case, a council official said: "It is considered that the proposed use would contribute positively to the life of Irvine town centre through the provision of additional leisure facilities at a highly accessible location within the town.

"The loss of a retail unit to a use that would attract footfall during daytime, into the evening and throughout the weekend would add to the vitality of Irvine town centre following a period of decline.

"The proposed use would help to reduce the number of vacant shops in the area.

"Through additional footfall, the proposed use has the potential to attract more people into the town centre, which would also support other businesses and services nearby."

The plans were approved with a condition that it must follow environmental health guidelines on noise levels.
