North Ayrshire's huge amount of derelict land revealed

A staggering 3.67 square miles of derelict sites - many of them former industrial areas such as the Ardeer site and the former steelworks in Glengarnock - now cover the North Ayrshire landscape.

They include large sections of the Garnock Valley's Lochshore area and part of the former steelworks site as well as the Ardeer area at Stevenston, including the NPL site and the three Nobel Enterprises areas.

Irvine's derelict areas include the former Ayrshire Central Hospital site, parts of Redburn and Riverside, and Montgomerie Park, while sections of Kilwinning's West Byrehill site also lie derelict.

The only local authority site in Scotland which has more derelict sites than North Ayrshire is North Lanarkshire - which has a 4.99 square metres.

In other parts of the county, East Ayrshire has 3.15 square miles of derelict land, with South Ayrshire having just 0.42. Meanwhile Glasgow has 3.22 square metres lying derelict.
