MARYMASS 2024 is officially underway - following a fantastic opening ceremony.

The famous Irvine festival kicked off last night, August 15, with the proceedings held outside, and then inside, the Townhouse.

There was plenty for locals to enjoy with activities beginning from 8pm at the first event of Marymass.

There were also a few bits of business which needed to be taken care of before the festival could be officially opened.

After those in attendance were in position, and getting engrossed in the festivities, pipers lead the Carters into the Townhouse from outside.

Alongside the provost of North Ayrshire Council, Anthea Dickson, it was then time for this year's Marymass Captain to be announced.

The race for captaincy was tight as expected, with 2022 and 2023 captain Gordon Storrar up against Ronnie Robson for the title this time around.

In the end, it was Gordon who was selected for a third consecutive festival.

Then, it was time for this year's royal party to be sashed and officially placed into their important roles for the weeks ahead.

Last year's Marymass Queen Rebecca Orr, along with her Marys Emily Muir, Hollie Surgenor, Summer Henderson and Freya Fitzsimmons were all in attendance to pass the baton onto this 2024's royals.

Queen Millie Barnes and Marys Lauren Wyllie, Hannah Nelson, Autaum Robinson and Rebecca Lusby were all welcomed into their roles.

They also had the chance to mingle with some former royals as they look forward to being part of the festival.

Next on the event calendar is the Fourth Port Parade, which begins tomorrow (Saturday August 17) at 11am from Second Avenue.

Later that evening, at around 9pm, the Festival of Light Parade will leave Irvine Cross - then it's time for the Marymass fireworks at Irvine Moor where there will be plenty of fun for all the enjoy.
