TWO people have appeared in court on separate charges of threatening behaviour and a 'transgender prejudiced assault' after police swooped on an Irvine street in a 'drugs arrest'.

Yassir Maslah, 20, faced charges of threatening or abusive behaviour after allegedly causing fear and alarm in Beaton Terrace on Wednesday, September 18.

Lauren McEwan appeared in court the same day, after a warrant was issued for her arrest at a home on the same street over earlier charges of assault to injury and sending obscene social media messages to the same complainer.

Both were arrested before police confirmed to the Times that 'a quantity of drugs were recovered' including heroin and cocaine.

However, the 20-year-old accused faced only a single charge of threatening or abusive behaviour when he appeared from custody on Thursday.

Maslah entered no plea to the single charge at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court.

Bail was granted for the accused, of Glasgow, and he will return to the same court at a later date.

Meanwhile, McEwan pleaded not guilty to separate charges of assault to injury and transgender abuse - having appeared from custody after a warrant was earlier issued due to her "whereabouts being unknown".

Court papers claimed she assaulted a woman in Burns Street on July 26 this year, allegedly pushing her on the body and then kicking her to the head and body to her injury.

It is alleged that McEwan then sent 'indecent, obscene, or menacing' messages to the complainer, taunting her and uttering transphobic remarks, while she was at Irvine police office on the same date.

According to court papers, both offences are aggravated by involving transphobic prejudice and were committed while the accused was out on bail, granted on June 3 at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court.

McEwan pleaded not guilty to both charges during the separate summary hearing and was released on bail.

She will face the allegations at a later date.

A Police Scotland spokesperson added today: "A 36-year-old woman was arrested and charged in connection with an assault and communications offences which took place on Burns Street, Irvine around 9.10am on Friday, July 26, 2024.

"She was due to appear at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court on Thursday, September, 19 2024."

Police have since confirmed that officers seized class A drugs from a property in Irvine, with the same 20-year-old arrested in connection.

However, no charges appeared on the Crown's petition against Maslah.

Police Scotland have been contacted for further clarification on the drugs seized.

Sgt Fraser, from Police Scotland Ayrshire's priority policing team, said: “This is a very significant recovery and sends a clear message that we will not tolerate drug dealing in our communities.

“Our officers are determined to protect members of the public from this harmful criminality, and this underlines that commitment. We will continue to work with the public and partner agencies to tackle this issue and make our communities safer."
