A MAN faces an attempted murder charge after his arrest in connection with an alleged serious assault in Irvine town centre.

Sean McKie appeared from custody today (October 9) following the reported violent incident on High Street at around 7pm on Tuesday, September 24.

We previously reported that a man was left in a serious condition in hospital after an alleged attack - with video footage widely shared on social media.

McKie, 36, faced four charges of assault when he appeared during a petition hearing held in private at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court.

One of the assault charges is said to be aggravated by causing 'severe injury, danger of life and attempted murder', with a separate assault charge to the alleged victim's injury.

He faces a fifth charge of allegedly behaving in a threatening or abusive manner causing fear and alarm.

McKie gave no plea to the allegations during the hearing.

He was committed for further examination and granted bail.

The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service told the Times his next appearance in court is yet to be confirmed.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Officers were made aware of a 43-year-old man having been seriously assaulted at Irvine High Street around 6pm on Tuesday, September 24, 2024.

“We also received a report of an assault of a 53-year-old man and a 41-year-old woman on High Street, Irvine. 

“A 36-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection and was due to appear at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court on Wednesday, October 9, 2024.”
