AN IRVINE man is behind bars after stealing from a supermarket in his hometown.
David Mackay was jailed following a brief appearance at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court on Wednesday, October 9.
The 47-year-old appeared before Sheriff Colin Bissett after pleading guilty to stealing a shopping basket and a quantity of meat products from Aldi on East Road on August 21 this year.
He was also awaiting punishment following a further admission in relation to breaching court orders imposed at an earlier date.
Sentence had previously been deferred so that a report could be obtained.
Defence solicitor Brian Holliman admitted that Mackay, of McKinlay Crescent, had "shown no serious attempt to engage in the order".
He added that his client accepts that fact, and that there was an "inevitability" that a custodial sentence was now the likely outcome.
Mr Holliman conceded that there was not much further to be said in mitigation given the terms of the report, only asking Sheriff Bissett to consider the early timing of Mackay's guilty pleas.
Mackay was sentenced to six months imprisonment.
