A MAN has died three weeks after a 'serious assault' on Irvine's High Street, police have confirmed.

The 43-year-old, named locally as Malcolm McCandlish, passed away in hospital yesterday (Monday, October 14) after the incident on September 24.

An online fund-raiser has been set up to "give him the send-off he deserves", and the GoFundMe page has since attracted hundreds of pounds in donations.

A 36-year-old man appeared at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court last week charged with attempted murder and police have now told the Times that a second male of the same age has also been arrested in connection with the alleged attack.

We previously reported that the now deceased man was left in a serious condition in hospital after an alleged attack - with video footage widely shared on social media.

Sean McKie faces four assault charges, including attempted murder.

He appeared from custody last week (October 9) following the reported violent incident on High Street at around 7pm on Tuesday, September 24.

One of the assault charges is said to be aggravated by causing 'severe injury, danger of life and attempted murder', with a separate assault charge to the alleged victim's injury.

He faces a fifth charge of allegedly behaving in a threatening or abusive manner causing fear and alarm. McKie gave no plea to the allegations during the hearing.

He was committed for further examination and granted bail.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Officers were made aware of a 43-year-old man having been seriously assaulted at Irvine High Street around 6pm on Tuesday, September, 24, 2024.
