A PHONE app that encourages people to bin litter responsibly is attracting more users every month.

North Ayrshire’s LitterLotto app is seeing thousands of items of rubbish being binned monthly by users who want to keep their communities tidy.

North Ayrshire Council has teamed up with partners to provide the free LitterLotto app, which offers rewards to encourage residents and visitors aged 13 and over to bin trash responsibly.

The LitterLotto partnership, facilitated by environmental charity Keep Scotland Beautiful, offers users the chance to Bin it to win it! by winning a monthly prize and weekly jackpots.

A monthly cash prize of £100 is up-for-grabs in North Ayrshire, and every time you responsibly bin a piece of litter you get another entry into the LitterLotto UK-wide weekly jackpot of £1,000.

Throughout September, 12,647 pieces of rubbish were binned by users, compared with 8630 in August.

The £100 winner for September was professional dog walker Sarah McMaster, who lives in West Kilbride.

She said: “I found out about LitterLotto a while ago through a Facebook group and I loved the idea of the app. I have been an occasional user – but will start using it much more now!

“The app is absolutely worth getting involved in and I will spend the £100 on a nice meal for my partner and I.”

North Ayrshire’s app was launched on April 1 as a year-long pilot project and the number of items being binned has grown steadily since.

It is simple to use, free to enter and all you need to do is download the app, take a photo on your device as you place your litter into a council street litter bin and wait to discover if you are the monthly prize draw winner – selected randomly - in North Ayrshire.
