THE new chair of Choose Kilwinning has urged locals to get behind their plans for the town's Christmas lights switch-on.

The voluntary organisation, who organise the event, have now confirmed that Kilwinning will be lit up this year - despite concerns that council cuts had put the event at risk.

The popular festive celebration is set to take place on Saturday, November 23, from 1.30pm-6pm.

However, with increased costs associated with the event, the group are now looking for locals to offer their support.

A spokesperson said: "We’re determined to create something truly magical for our families - especially the children who wait all year to see those sparkling lights and feel the wonder of the season.

"We need your help to make it happen! This year, many of our lights are no longer working and can’t be repaired, meaning we’ll have fewer lights than usual.

"Yet, we believe it’s more important than ever to bring some warmth and joy to these dark winter nights.

"Our kids deserve that magic, and we want to make sure their eyes light up just as much as the town does!"

New Choose Kilwinning chair Amanda McLaughlan further explained the additional costs this year.

The cutting of council support means that the organising group must now front the costs for this cost for storing, testing, transporting, installing and removing the lights.

It was feared this could cost as much as £8,000 but a local company has agreed to complete the work for a competitive cost of £5,000.

Amanda added: "We are calling on Kilwinning residents and businesses to support us!

"We’ve got plenty of fun planned alongside the lights, with festive stalls, exciting activities for the little ones, and of course, a special visit from Santa himself.

"Just imagine the joy on their faces as they experience all the magic of the season right here in our town.

"But to make this a reality, and to build towards an even bigger display next year, we need Kilwinning’s support. Whether you can donate or offer your time as a volunteer, every little bit helps.

"Together, we can create a display that not only brings happiness this year but grows into something even more spectacular for the future."

Those who would like to make a donation are able to do so via various collection tins located within businesses in the town, by card at the Main Street Post Office, or you can contact Choosekilwinning@gmail.com.

Amanda commented: "Let’s give our children - and our whole community - something to smile about this Christmas. Together, we can make our town shine brighter than ever!"
