KILWINNING Abbey Church will mark a historic milestone next weekend as it celebrates its 250th anniversary with a special Thanksgiving service.

The service, at 2.30pm on Sunday, November 17, will be held in the church and will bring together local dignitaries, civic leaders, and the wider community for a memorable occasion.

The historical landmark was originally built by John Garland and John Wright, with construction completed in 1774.

The church stands on the site of its 16th-century predecessor, which itself was built within the ruins of Kilwinning Abbey, founded in approximately 1188.

Special guests attending the anniversary event will include North Ayrshire's Provost, members of North Ayrshire Council, Irene Campbell MP, Katy Clark MSP, Paul O'Kane MSP, former ministers of the church including the Rev Bill Buchan and the Rev Janette Whitecross, and members of local civic groups.

The church will also welcome The Earl and Countess of Eglinton and Winton, whose presence underscores the significance of the milestone celebration.

The service will offer a moment of reflection and gratitude for the church’s long-standing role in the community, and it is open to all who wish to join in marking the remarkable occasion.

A spokesperson for Kilwinning Abbey Church said: "We are thrilled to be celebrating 250 years of Kilwinning Abbey Church, a place of worship, history, and community.

"This milestone event provides a wonderful opportunity to reflect on our shared history and the many contributions the church has made to the life of the town and beyond.

"We invite everyone, whether members of the church or the local community, to come and be part of this special service as we give thanks for the past, present, and future of Kilwinning Abbey Church."

Following the service, all are warmly invited to gather in the church hall for teas and coffee, providing an opportunity for fellowship and conversation.
