THIS Thursday, November 21, is Carer's Rights Day and there will be a series of events in North Ayrshire to mark the occasion.

This year's day will focus on "recognising your rights" as a carer.

And Carers Gateway North Ayrshire is hosting a series of events to help people across the region understand and access the support and benefits they're entitled to.

David Cooke, service manager at Carers Gateway North Ayrshire, said: "As a carer, knowing your rights is empowering and ensures you can get the help you need

"Our aim is to make carers aware of their legal entitlements, from unpaid leave to requesting a carer's assessment."

The centerpiece of Carers Rights Day activities is a Carers Roadshow at the George Steven Centre in Kilbirnie from 1pm to 5pm.

The organisation has invited elected representatives including Councillor Nairn McDonald to meet carers, listen to their stories, and hear about the key improvements that could help support the estimated 800,000 carers in Scotland who give their time and energy to care for loved ones.

In turn, the events provide a platform for carers to share the critical issues that they face – such as financial insecurity and access to breaks - and emphasise the importance of sustained funding for carers centres which provide lifeline services.

There will be information stands from Carers Gateway, North Ayrshire Health and Social Care Partnership and other local organizations so people learn about their rights and access support services.

Carers Gateway will also host pop-up information stands on November 21 in Largs, Irvine, Kilwinning, Stevenston, and Brodick to reach carers across North Ayrshire.

David added: "Every day, unpaid carers make incredible sacrifices to support their loved ones. Carers Rights Day is about empowering them with the knowledge and resources they need to take care of themselves as well."

As part of North Ayrshire Carers Gateway’s commitment to bringing the service to each locality there will also be pop-up information stands on Thursday, November 21 in:

  • Vikingard, Largs from 1pm to 4pm
  • Irvine Library from 10am to 2pm
  • Ayrshire College, Kilwinning from 10am to 1pm
  • Auchenharvie Sports Centre from 1pm to 4pm
  • Brodick Library from 11am to 3pm

Under the Carers Act (2016) carers are entitled to:

  • The right to unpaid Carer’s leave
  • The right to request flexible working
  • The right to ask your GP practice to identify you as a carer
  • The right (and choice) to request a free flu jab
  • Protection against discrimination or harassment
  • Requesting a carer’s assessment
  • Being consulted when the person you care for is discharged from hospital.
