IRVINE Sharks continued their winning start to life in Division 3 of the Strathclyde Basketball League on Thursday with a convincing 75-40 win over Ayr Storm 3 on Thursday.
The Sharks, powered by Zion Security Ltd, went into the Ayrshire derby clash off the back of an impressive win over North Lanarkshire Chiefs in their opening match, and asserted their dominance from the start in the Kyle Academy clash, the Sharks' tough defence forcing a series of turnovers from their opponents and earning them a 16-5 lead after the first quarter.
The Sharks continued to dominate defensively throughout the game, scoring consistently through a great all-round performance, with every player getting time on the court and each player making it on to the scoring sheet.
Graham McNamee showed his size around the basket dominating in terms of rebounding and scoring, while Graham Hunter went off with four out of four three pointers in the third quarter seeing the lead escalate to the point of no return for Storm as the Sharks swam off with a comfortable win.
Former professional player Hunter led the Sharks' scoring with 19 points, followed by MacNamee with 18.
Club co-founder and player/assistant coach Ian Johnstone commented: ““I felt the team went out and got the job done early, largely based on defence, before easing off and getting sloppy in the second half.
“Tougher games lie ahead, and the team will have to eliminate lapses in concentration for the season to be deemed a success in the long run.
“That being said, this is only the second game the team have played together, and we should be happy with the win.”
Power forward Stewart McGarry added: “We were too big for Storm in the end up. We took a good lead after two quarters and we really stepped it up in the second half to make it a comfortable win.”
The Sharks will be back in action next at the Shark Tank (Greenwood Academy) on October 27 at 7.45pm, when they face up against top-of-the-table Glasgow Chinese, who, like the Sharks, have yet to taste defeat in the league this season.
Entry is free and all welcome.
