The Irvine Sharks Basketball Club chalked up a fine 83-47 win at home to Bishopton Broncos in their fourth match of the season at the Greenwood Academy 'Shark Tank' on Friday.

The game was a must win for the Sharks as they and the Broncos were the last two unbeaten in the league so far in a battle for the top of the table.

The Sharks, powered by Zion Security Ltd, got off to a sluggish start after three weeks with no games, but big man Jamie Frew and Chris McCallum got them going with with impressive scoring and playing through fouls as the hosts finished the the first quarter leading 20-13.

In the second quarter the Sharks again didn’t get going however power forward Aboulaye Senghor kept them afloat with a dominant scoring performance as the home team finished the half leading 30-23.

And the hosts sunk their teeth into the Broncos' defence in the third quarter, with impressive defence and rebounding from big man Scott Frew.

Graham Hunter went off on two streaks putting up 24 points in the second half as the Sharks swam off with the win.

Player-coach Graham Hunter top scored with an impressive 24 points followed by Aboulaye Senghor with 19, while team captain Chris McCallum added 16.

Captain McCallum said: “The first half was uncharacteristically flat from us. That said we showed enough to be on the right side of the score line at the break.

“When we clicked in the third, we had too much for the Broncos who, credit due, had some capable players and were well organised.

“The exciting thing for me is that there is still a lot of room for improvement from us.”

Power forward Jamie Frew added: “Great team win again this week against a very well organised team.

“It took us a while to shake off the long break between games, but we were able to pull away in the second half when we lifted our defensive intensity.

“Every game we have a different number stepping up and making big plays showing just how talented and unselfish our team is.

“It’s great to see the guys playing for the name on the front and not the number on the back.”

The Sharks returned to action on Monday away to the Glasgow Devils, while their next home match is at Greenwood Academy on December 1 at 7.45pm - entry is free and all welcome.
