STEVENSTON has been selected to host the world championships of a sporting event.
Auchenharvie Leisure Centre will stage the 2025 edition of the World Wheelchair Curling Championship and World Wheelchair Mixed Doubles Curling Championship.
The World Wheelchair Curling Championship will run from March 1–8 and will be followed by the World Wheelchair Mixed Doubles Curling Championship from March 11–16.
When the competition takes place, it will be the first time in its history that North Ayrshire has been the host county.
World Curling made the announcement earlier this month, confirming that the tournament will be held on the ice rink within the leisure centre.
Stevenston will not be the only North Ayrshire town playing its part during the event, with athletes to be accommodated at the fully wheelchair accessible sportscotland National Sports Training Centre Inverclyde in Largs.
World Curling Head of Competitions Eeva Roethlisberger said: “We are delighted to be bringing our wheelchair events to Scotland.
“These are vitally important events for our wheelchair athletes. This season marks the final opportunity to earn Paralympic Qualification Points for Milano Cortina 2026 and will confirm the Paralympic lineup.
"I’m sure the local organisers will do a wonderful job of hosting these championships and ensure our wheelchair athletes have an excellent experience.”
CEO of Scottish Curling Vincent Bryson added: “We’re absolutely thrilled to be bringing these events to North Ayrshire for the very first time and know that we’ll be able to create a world class event with a warm welcome on the beautiful west coast of Scotland."
