THE Irvine Sharks basketball club made it a five-star start to their league season as they maintained their perfect record.
The Greenwood Academy based side made it five wins from five in the Strathclyde League Basketball Association Division Two with victory over the Glasgow University Tigers on Sunday, November 3.
After getting off to a slow start in Glasgow's west end, with the home side opening the scoring, the Sharks bit back and scored consistently through the game as well as shutting down the Tigers defensively.
When the final buzzer sounded at the end of the fourth quarter, it was a comfortable victory for the North Ayrshire outfit who won 72-53.
Graham Hunter top scored in the match with 24 points followed by Chris McCallum who added 10.
Following on from their Division Three triumph last season, the Sharks are yet to face defeat following promotion this year.
They sit atop the standings at present and are one of only two undefeated sides in the league.
Following their recent victory player Stefano Kalonji, who joined the club this season, hailed the team effort which helped secure the win.
He said: “Our first early start game of the season had the guys a bit slow out the gates in the first half, but we picked it up in the second despite some full court pressure from the Tigers.
“We continue to build on each game and we’re proud of everyone’s contributions so far with our 5-0 start.
“We’ve got a great bunch of guys who are supportive, and we push each other to give our best efforts every time – it’s been a fun journey so far!”
The Sharks are back in action on Friday, November 8, at Greenwood Academy as they aim to continue their fine form against East Kilbride Spartans. Tip off is at 7.30pm.
Following that, they enter the first round of the Chair’s Cup where they will face off against the Aberdeen Arrows on Sunday, November 10, with tip off at 2.30pm.
